McKenzie Stubbert

Composer / Musician, Eugene, Oregon

McKenzie Stubbert is a composer living in Oregon. His work possesses a sort of double reflection. A dialogue between seemingly incongruous elements and styles. Playful in it’s experimentation with traditional modes and yet always remaining accessible. His classical sensibilities are often accompanied by a contemporary aesthetic. An artist of counterpoint both sonically and emotionally, his compositions expresses a joyfulness, full but sober and halting, a hopeful sadness which never falls to despair. Each austere characteristic or mood softened by the presence of it’s opposite.

Most recently he has collaborated with Poet Tobin Johnston on The Brutalist (2008); a performance of sound collages and music set to poetry.

In 2007, he premiered a more traditional work with Three to Five Separate Waves, a work for string quintet that was part of an art exhibit featuring the work of Portland, Oregon artist Spencer Reynolds.

In 2006 he released That Is To Say… , a collection of Tangos, delusions and interludes; a project recorded in his house with producer/engineer Ashley Stubbert. Something akin to a film soundtrack without a film to go with it.

Additionally, Stubbert continues to work on various film, television, and advertising projects. He is the staff composer for Pushplay Productions.
